## Research (peer-reviewed)
- Adding citations, quotations or statistics improved visibility in generative-engine answers by 30-40% on a position-adjusted word-count metric (Aggarwal et al., "GEO: Generative Engine Optimization", ACM SIGKDD 2024, doi:10.1145/3637528.3671900)
- The effect depends on existing rank: adding source citations raised visibility 115.1% for a page ranked fifth, and lowered it 30.3% for a page already ranked first (same paper, Table 2)
- Keyword stuffing produced "little to no improvement", and performed 10% worse than baseline against live Perplexity (same paper)
- Of 54 method-domain combinations tested, only 3 produced a statistically significant citation-ranking improvement; adding statistics reduced ranking in 19 of 24 settings (Puerto et al., "C-SEO Bench", NeurIPS 2025 Datasets & Benchmarks, arXiv:2506.11097)

- Sites blocking Google's AI crawler lose AI Overview visibility even when their content is otherwise accessible (same paper)
